Sharing the Magic of the Northern Lights
My Mother was one of those magical people, a magnet for weird and wonderful things that just seemed to happen around her 🤩
My favourite weird event was when we were hiking on Dartmoor and she stumbled upon a mysterious plastic box. We thought it was someone's forgotten lunch, but inside, we found a tiny book.
The scribbles inside challenged whoever found it to jot down where they found it, where they wanted to travel most, and why, then pass it on. It was like a message in a bottle but with a twist! 🍾
Mother wrote inside that she was with her daughter on Dartmoor when she found this box.
She would most love to travel to Norway to see the Northern Lights because the intense colours remind her that life is to be celebrated and you should do everything you want to. 🥳
She said the colours were like nature’s fairy lights.
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are these incredible natural light shows you can see in the sky, especially in places like Norway.
They come in all sorts of shapes and colours, like curtains or spirals, and they light up the whole sky with their brilliance.
We found ourselves sitting on a rock, discussing how we could save up and travel to see the Aurora. We planned every detail of our adventure.
But she never made that trip.
When I was 33, she died of cancer. She was only 59. I never realised how much it would hurt. Losing her felt like losing my partner in crime. 😢
I always thought she'd be there, you know? I imagined days of taking her for trips out. Sipping tea by the Devon shoreline near to where she lived.
Enjoying the sea spray smell and the bright, warm sunshine on our faces. Being wrapped up in cosy coats and guarding bags of chips from thieving seagulls!
Maybe one day, I’d be brushing her hair when she was 90, with long, snowy locks.
I was determined not to waste a single moment of my life.
So, I chased my dream of being an artist, as if on a quest.
Trying and failing so many times it hurt, until suddenly, inspiration struck. Like an epiphany. I remembered her dream of seeing the Northern Lights and knew I wanted to capture their magic in my art.
As I stood in my art studio, her words echoing in my mind, I started painting. I knew that my mother’s spirit was with me, guiding my hand as I brought the Aurora to life on the canvas.
My Transcend collection of artworks is a homage to my mother.
It celebrates the magical dancing lights and reminds us of my Mother's message to make the best of every day.

Transcend is a collection of prints made from my original oil paintings of the Aurora Borealis and an homage to my mother.

About Claire
Claire is an artist based in Staffordshire UK. She works in oils and sculpture to express her magical concepts. Her work is owned by collectors in the USA and UK and she has exhibited at the Oxo Tower Wharf Gallery London, the Nude Tin Can gallery in St. Albans and local galleries in Staffordshire.
She was selected to exhibit her textile sculpture for the Wildlife Trusts 50th Anniversary at the Museum of Cannock Chase with her owl sculpture made from offcuts of fabric, paper and wood.
In her free time she loves to go to take mini breaks with her husband in the camper van called Ned, and cuddling her cat Dennis
